Diani vs Zanzibar vs Mauritius for a beach wedding
Three Indian Ocean favourites compared honestly — getting there, beaches, weather, culture, safari add-ons and budget — so you can choose the shore that fits your celebration.
If you are dreaming of saying your vows on white sand by the Indian Ocean, three names come up again and again: Diani on Kenya's south coast, the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar, and Mauritius. All three are beautiful. They are also very different in how they feel, how guests get there and what the celebration can include.
We plan celebrations in Kenya, so we are naturally fond of Diani. But the right destination is the one that fits your guests, your budget and the story you want to tell, so this comparison is written to be fair. If Zanzibar or Mauritius suits you better, we would rather you knew.
At a glance
Diani is a long, wide stretch of white-sand beach backed by tropical forest, with a relaxed, easy-going feel and the rest of Kenya, including world-class safari, close at hand. Zanzibar is a spice island with deep Swahili and Arab heritage, the historic Stone Town and a dramatic range of beaches. Mauritius is a polished island of luxury resorts, lagoons and mountains, with a long-established wedding industry.
Getting there
Diani is reached by a short domestic flight from Nairobi to Ukunda airstrip, close to the beach, or by flying into Mombasa and driving south. Many international guests connect through Nairobi, which is one of Africa's best-connected airports, and that makes it easy to add a few days in the city or on safari.
Zanzibar has its own international airport with connections through the Middle East, East Africa and some direct seasonal flights from Europe. Mauritius is the furthest from the African mainland, but it has strong long-haul links, particularly from Europe and through Dubai, so for many European guests it is a straightforward journey.
Visa rules differ for each country and change from time to time. Kenya currently asks most visitors to apply for an electronic travel authorisation before travel. Check the current requirements for each guest's passport before you send save-the-dates.
The beaches and the sea
Diani's beach is long, wide and soft, with water that stays swimmable for much of the day. Reef protects much of the shore, and at low tide rock pools appear. It is a beach that suits large ceremonies, beach dinners and barefoot receptions.
Zanzibar's beaches vary a great deal by coast. The north, around Nungwi and Kendwa, is known for swimmable water at most tides and beautiful sunsets. The east coast, around Paje, has dramatic tides that can carry the sea far out for hours, which is stunning for photographs but needs careful ceremony timing.
Mauritius is ringed by coral lagoons with calm, clear water, and many resorts sit directly on their own stretch of sand. Beach space is often resort-managed, which brings polish and privacy but can mean less flexibility over where and how you set up.
Weather and the best months
On the Kenyan coast, the most reliable months are roughly July to October and January to March. The long rains, usually heaviest from April to early June, are the time to avoid an open beach ceremony.
Zanzibar's pattern is broadly similar, with its main rains usually falling from around March to May and lighter rains around November.
Mauritius is in the southern hemisphere, so its seasons run the other way. Its warm, humid summer from around November to April is also its cyclone season. The cooler months from around May to October are drier, though some coasts can be windy.
Culture and atmosphere
Diani blends Swahili coastal culture with an international beach community. It feels relaxed rather than formal, and it is easy to bring in Kenyan design, food, music and family traditions — something many diaspora couples especially value.
Zanzibar has an extraordinary sense of history, from the carved doors and alleys of Stone Town to spice farms and dhow sailing. It is a predominantly Muslim island, so modest dress in town and respect for local customs, especially during Ramadan, are part of planning.
Mauritius mixes Indian, African, French and Chinese influences into a cosmopolitan island culture. Its wedding scene is highly resort-led, which suits couples who want a seamless, all-in-one experience.
Adding a safari
This is where Diani stands apart. From the Kenyan coast, guests can fly to the Maasai Mara, Amboseli or Tsavo in a short hop, and some of Kenya's great wildlife areas can be combined in a single trip. A beach wedding followed by a safari — or a safari honeymoon — is simple to arrange.
Zanzibar also pairs well with safari, through flights to Tanzania's national parks such as the Serengeti. Mauritius has no safari; couples who want wildlife usually add a separate trip to the African mainland.
Budget and guest experience
Costs depend far more on the venue, the season and your guest list than on the destination name. Diani offers a wide range, from boutique hotels and private villas to luxury resorts, which makes it easier to host guests on different budgets. Zanzibar offers a similar spread. Mauritius is generally known for its premium resorts, and accommodation there often sits at the higher end.
For any of the three, consider the total cost to your guests — flights, stays and time off work — as well as your own budget. A destination that is a little cheaper for you can be much more expensive for the people you most want there.
Getting legally married
All three destinations allow foreign couples to marry, each with its own paperwork, notice periods and documents. Many couples choose to complete the legal formalities at home and hold a symbolic ceremony on the beach, which removes most of the paperwork. Which one is right for you?
Choose Diani if you want a relaxed beach celebration with room for a big guest list, Kenyan culture and family woven in, and the option of a safari before or after.
Choose Zanzibar if history and atmosphere matter most — Stone Town, spice-island character and sunset dhows — and you are happy to plan around its tides and customs.
Choose Mauritius if you want a polished resort experience with everything in one place, your guests are mostly flying from Europe, and safari is not part of the plan.
